How to disagree with other professionals in a friendly and tactful way.
As a mentor usually says, we can disagree without being disagreeable. This calls for emotional intelligence.
If you don’t care about being offensive while conveying your thoughts, then this is not for you. However, if you wish to disagree with colleagues without appearing offensive, these tips will help you:
1. Appreciate the person for his/her contribution: For example, “Thank you for sharing XYZ.”
2. Acknowledge the new things you have learnt (if any): For example, “I didn’t know about XYZ until you mentioned it and that was insightful.”
3. Acknowledge the points you agree with: For example, “I agree with you that XYZ is being done currently. I also agree that EFG cannot begin yet.”
4. Talk about the points you disagree with and share logical reasons. For example, “However, I have different thoughts about ABC. I disagree with the points you raised for these reasons…”
